Over the weekend, British graffiti artist Banksy unveiled his latest show. Dismaland is a temporary art project at Tropicana, an abandoned lido in seaside resort town, Weston-super-Mare. The project was kept well under wraps as locals thought a production company were filming a crime thriller when activity was spotted around the disused lido.
Banksy himself describes the secretive pop-up exhibition as “a sinister twist on Disneyland” which is unsuitable for children. Full of installations ripe with painfully relevant social commentary, thousands are keen to visit.
Perhaps the most interesting part about Dismaland is the social frenzy Banksy has managed to create. The demand for the tickets has been so high, the website crashed repeatedly. With a jpeg for a calendar and an upside down cart that couldn’t be filled, thousands of people took to social media. #Dismaland almost immediately started trending on Twitter and it didn’t take long for people to figure out exactly what Banksy was doing.
All of this has been deliberately contrived by Banksy as part of the Dismaland experience. The artist has wonderfully captured the dismal experience of trying to obtain pre-booked tickets. Many were quick to point out that by visiting the website in hope of finding tickets, we were part of the art ourselves.
With over 230,263 tweets and rising, Banksy has not only achieved something many advertising campaigns aim for, he has also set the bar pretty high for fastest trending topic on social media.
