Halloween is over, bring on Christmas

So Hallowe’en is over and Christmas is on its way… according to brands and advertising even though we all know it’s weeks away.

On the 1st November the Oxford Street lights turned on and on the 2nd November there was already a Christmas themed promoted hashtag courtesy of Lidl and the #SchoolofChristmas

That’s right. It’s already happened. People haven’t really put Halloween to bed and now Christmas has come around the corner screaming ‘IT’S MY TURN NOW’. Calm down Christmas.

Christmas adverts are oddly highly anticipated and it’s a time where some brands go head on and try to one up eachother. Over the past few years, John Lewis have been leading the game with apparent ‘teasers’ beginning to emerge and a full social media strategy appearing to be in full swing.

On the flipside, PayPal sparked ‘controversy’ on the 1st November when they aired their advert during an X Factor ad break with many Twitter users and the Daily Mail claiming Christmas has been ruined for children.

It’s now looking as though the original video has been removed/made private on YouTube due to the backlash, hence the Daily Mail version embedded here.

Oops.
So there we go. We’re only just in November and we already have a snapshot of what brands are doing for Christmas. We will certainly be keeping a close eye on John Lewis, the reigning Christmas marketing champions.
